StepUp to Curtin

Curtin has reviewed and amended the criteria for StepUp eligibility and the criteria that defines inclusion on the school list for the 2018 intake. The StepUp to Curtin program is for West Australian applicants only.

StepUp to Curtin could be your key to a rewarding future.

About StepUp

About StepUp to Curtin

Not everyone has the same opportunities to achieve their true academic potential. You may have the ability to succeed at university but not had the educational, financial or social opportunities to focus on your studies and achieve a high enough Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for entry. That’s where StepUp can help.

StepUp to Curtin is a collaboration of two Alternative Access Schemes, StepUp Entry and StepUp Bonus. Both Schemes are for school leavers and non-school leavers, and grant bonus ATAR points making applicants eligible to be considered for admission into Curtin courses.

Successful StepUp Entry and StepUp Bonus applicants will be eligible to be considered for admission into courses at Curtin University, in courses with no prerequisites or where prerequisite requirements have been met. That means you could start your course at Curtin in first semester 2018.

StepUp to Curtin is one of many equity initiatives at Curtin that work towards breaking down the barriers to higher education.

StepUp Entry

If your ATAR is 60-69.95 and think you won’t meet Curtin’s minimum ATAR of 70.00, you could still study at Curtin.

Check if you're eligible for StepUp Entry

  • You must be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (including Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder)
  • You must achieve an ATAR from 60.00 to 69.95

    • a scaled mark of at least 50 in WACE English ATAR, Literature ATAR or English as an Additional Language/Dialect ATAR, OR
    • a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Written English test minimum score of 140, OR
    • another approved English test

Plus you must meet ONE of the following eligibility measures:

MeasureYou're eligible if
Financial hardshipYou are receiving Youth Allowance, or have a parent or guardian receiving a Commonwealth Income Support or Commonwealth means-tested Assistance payment.
Indigenous AustralianYou have an Indigenous Australian background.

Application deadlines

To be considered for StepUp Entry for Semester One, you need to apply via TISC.  Please refer to the TISC Calendar for deadlines and important dates.

Main Round

You have until midnight on Thursday 4 January 2018, to submit your application through TISC.  If you do not submit your application by this date there is no guarantee you can be considered for the Main Round of TISC offers.

Second Round

You have until midnight on Monday 22 January 2018, to submit your application through TISC.  If you do not submit your application by this date there is no guarantee you can be considered for the Second Round of TISC offers.

How to apply for StepUp Entry

First semester intake

To apply for first semester entry at Curtin, you’ll need to lodge your application through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC). Applications for 2018 university admission will open on 7 August 2017 and close on the 17th January 2018. See the TISC calendar on the TISC website for important dates and deadlines.

All West Australian current year 12 applicants will be notified of your eligibility for entry to Curtin’s 70 ATAR courses through StepUp Entry via the Universities Admission Advice Letter (UAAL). The UAAL is available through TISC and contains information on all WACE courses, former TEE subjects that have a scaled score, ATAR results, and university eligibility messages.

If you believe you’ve met one of the StepUp to Curtin eligibility measures but you haven’t been advised if you’re eligible for StepUp in your UAAL, please contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email stepup@curtin.edu.au to discuss your eligibility as soon as you receive your results.

Please note: If you achieved an ATAR between 60.00 and 69.95 and believe you are eligible for StepUp Entry to Curtin but did not achieve WACE please contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email at stepup@curtin.edu.au for further advice.

To be considered for a place in a 70 ATAR Curtin course, you must meet any course prerequisite requirements and satisfy Curtin’s English competency requirements.

Financial hardship applicants

If you or your parents/guardian face financial hardship, you’ll need to submit a StepUp to Curtin application form and attach copies of documentation with your Centrelink customer reference number.

Financial hardship can’t be automatically assessed on TISC, but is instead assessed on an individual basis. The Application deadlines within the above drop box apply to these applications. You need to wait until you have received your WACE results before completing the application form.

For further information contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email at stepup@curtin.edu.au.

If you're eligible for StepUp except for competence in English

If you’ve met all StepUp requirements except for competence in English, you’ll be notified by email and in your UAAL that you must meet Curtin’s English Entry requirements to be considered for admission to Curtin’s 70 ATAR courses via the StepUp to Curtin Entry Pathway. If you achieve a sufficient score in a Curtin approved English proficiency test, you will satisfy this requirement.

If you sit the Written English section of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) to meet English competency, your results will automatically be made available to TISC. If you’re successful in the STAT you’ll receive a message in your UAAL advising of your eligibility for entry to Curtin’s 70 ATAR courses through StepUp, and you’ll automatically be given a notional ATAR of 70.

If you still need to achieve English competency to be eligible for StepUp in time for the main round of Offers, every effort will be made to process your application. However, there are no guarantees and it may result in you being considered for a Curtin course in the second round of TISC offers.

Mature age applicants

To be considered as a StepUp mature age applicant you must have completed WACE or equivalent in the past and be more than 20 years of age or over before 1 March in the relevant admission year.

As a mature age applicant you will be notified of your eligibility through your offer letter.

The Future Students Centre runs information sessions to advise prospective mature age students about going to university, including information about career changes, entry pathways and support services available. Learn more about the Curtin information sessions.

For important dates and further information contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email at stepup@curtin.edu.au

Second semester intake

Mid-year entry applicants who would like to be considered for Admission into 70.00 ATAR courses at Curtin through StepUp Entry must first submit an online StepUp Entry application form with supporting documentation. Applications for semester 2 2018 are not currently open.

StepUp Bonus

If you’re eligible for StepUp Bonus you will be granted five additional bonus ATAR points (capped at 99.00) and could gain entry into courses you would have otherwise just missed out on.

For 2018 Curtin University has created two new eligibility measures whereby students who do not attend a School on the eligible StepUp School list can be considered eligible for the five additional bonus ATAR points.  These are:

  • Indigenous Australian
  • Financial Hardship (see Financial hardship drop box).

Check if you're eligible for StepUp Bonus

You must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • You must be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (including Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder)
  • You must achieve an ATAR of 70.00 or higher
  • You must demonstrate English language proficiency, by:
    • a scaled mark of at least 50 in WACE English ATAR, Literature ATAR or English as an Additional Language/Dialect ATAR, OR
    • a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Written English test minimum score of 140, OR
    • another approved English test
  • You must have attended a StepUp eligible school in Western Australia; or meet either of the two eligibility measures of Financial Hardship or have an Indigenous Australian background.

This means you must have completed Year 12 at a school with an Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) value of 1000 or less, or a school located in a designated regional or remote area (including students completing Year 12 through the School of Isolated and Distance Education) or a school with low tertiary entrance participation rates.  See the approved School list below.

(For 2018 Curtin University has created two new categories whereby students who do not attend a School on the eligible StepUp School list can submit individual applications for consideration for the 5 Bonus Points. See details below)

If you achieve competency in English through a Curtin approved English language test other than the STAT, you’ll need to provide relevant documentation to the Admissions Office via email at admissions@curtin.edu.au for direct entry or to TISC for applications lodged via TISC.

If you still need to achieve English competency to be eligible for StepUp in time for the main round of Offers, every effort will be made to process your application. However, there are no guarantees and it may result in you being considered for a Curtin course in the second round of TISC offers.

Support

Support

Scholarships

Most Australian students can defer their university fees, but initial and on-going costs such as books, parking and day-to-day living can put people off applying. This is where scholarships can help.

Scholarships are part of Curtin’s commitment to rewarding academic excellence and enabling students from all backgrounds to realise their potential and graduate with high practical employability skills and to achieve their ambitions.

Future and current students who can demonstrate financial hardship have priority in receiving equity scholarships and grants to assist with university and living expenses.

Sign up for our Scholarships Email Alert to receive an email reminder when scholarships are open for application, or visit Curtin’s Scholarships website for more details about specific scholarships.

Housing

Curtin Housing Services provides students with comprehensive information about on- and off-campus housing alternatives.

On-campus housing is always in high demand, so if you’re eligible for StepUp, we advise you to submit your housing application as soon as possible. On the housing application form, state in the final question within section three that you are a StepUp applicant.

For online application forms, photos of housing and more information about housing services and accommodation costs, visit the Housing Services website.

Support services

We understand that starting university is a big learning curve for new students and comes with many challenges, so we have many support services to help you with the transition.
