StepUp to Curtin

StepUp to Curtin could be your key to a rewarding future.

Not everyone has the same opportunities to achieve their true academic potential. You may have the ability to succeed at university but not had the educational, financial or social opportunities to focus on your studies and achieve a high enough Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for entry. That’s where StepUp can help.

What is StepUp?

StepUp to Curtin is a collaboration of two Alternative Access Schemes, StepUp Entry and StepUp Equity Adjustment Admission Pathway (StepUp Bonus).

Both schemes are for school leavers and non-school leavers, and grant an adjustment factor of additional ATAR points making applicants eligible to be considered for admission into Curtin courses.

StepUp to Curtin is one of many equity initiatives at Curtin that work towards breaking down the barriers to higher education.

Successful StepUp Entry and StepUp Equity Adjustment Admission Pathway (StepUp Bonus) applicants will be eligible to be considered for admission into courses at Curtin University, in courses with no prerequisites or where prerequisite requirements have been met.

StepUp Entry

If your ATAR is 60-69.95 and you think you won’t meet Curtin’s minimum ATAR of 70.00, you could still study at Curtin.

Check if you're eligible

You must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (including Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder)
  • Have achieved an ATAR from 60.00 to 69.95
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency by:
    • a scaled mark of at least 50 in WACE English ATAR, Literature ATAR or English as an Additional Language/Dialect ATAR, OR
    • a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Written English test minimum score of 140, OR
    • another approved English test
  • Meet any course prerequisite requirements

Plus you must meet one of the following eligibility measures:

MeasureYou're eligible if
Financial hardshipYou are receiving Youth Allowance, or have a parent or guardian receiving a Commonwealth Income Support or Commonwealth means-tested Assistance payment.

See the approved School list below.

Semester two

Please refer to our application deadlines to find out when applications close for your desired course.

How to apply

Semester one

You’ll need to lodge your admission application through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC). Applications for 2020 university admission will open in August 2019 and close in January 2020. See the TISC calendar for important dates and deadlines.

All West Australian current year 12 applicants will be notified of their eligibility for entry to Curtin’s 70 ATAR courses through StepUp Entry via the Universities Admission Advice Letter (UAAL). The UAAL is available through TISC and contains information on all WACE courses, former TEE subjects that have a scaled score, ATAR results, and university eligibility messages.

For TISC applicants, you are not required to apply for StepUp Entry, unless you are applying based on Financial hardship.

Financial hardship applicants: Please refer to the Financial hardship applicants  section for further information.

If you believe you’ve met one of the StepUp Entry eligibility measures but you haven’t been advised if you’re eligible for StepUp to Curtin in your UAAL, please contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email stepup@curtin.edu.au to discuss your eligibility as soon as you receive your WACE results.

Semester two

Applicants who would like to be considered for admission into 70.00 ATAR courses at Curtin through StepUp Entry must submit an eApplication for their desired course, also the StepUp to Curtin application form. Please refer to our application deadlines to view application opening dates specific to your chosen course.

Please note: If you achieved an ATAR between 60.00 and 69.95 and believe you are eligible for StepUp Entry to Curtin but did not achieve WACE please contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email at stepup@curtin.edu.au for further advice.

To be considered for a place in a 70 ATAR Curtin course, you must meet any course prerequisite requirements and satisfy Curtin’s English language proficiency requirements.

Financial hardship applicants

If you or your parents/guardian face financial hardship, you’ll need to submit a StepUp Entry application form and attach copies of documentation with your Centrelink customer reference number.

Financial hardship can’t be automatically assessed on TISC, but is instead assessed on an individual basis. The application deadlines within the drop box above apply to these applications. You need to wait until you have received your WACE results before completing the application form.

For further information contact the Admissions Office on 1300 222 888 or via email at stepup@curtin.edu.au.

If you are sitting the STAT Written English test and the test result is in time for the January offer round, your application will be considered in the January offer round.

If you choose to sit a Curtin approved English language proficiency test other than the STAT Written English section, you’ll need to provide the English test result* to TISC.

*For Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, please send a secure copy of result to TISC through your online PTE Academic account, this will allow TISC to verify your test result.

Financial hardship applicants:

We are unable to proceed with any financial hardship application until you have satisfied the required English language proficiency.

If you choose to sit a Curtin approved English language proficiency test other than the STAT Written English section, you’ll need to provide your English test result to the Admissions Office by attaching it to your StepUp to Curtin application form for financial hardship form.

Support

Scholarships and support services

Scholarships

Most Australian students can defer their university fees, but initial and on-going costs such as books, parking and day-to-day living can put people off applying. This is where scholarships can help.

Scholarships are part of Curtin’s commitment to rewarding academic excellence and enabling students from all backgrounds to realise their potential and graduate with high practical employability skills and to achieve their ambitions.

Future and current students who can demonstrate financial hardship have priority in receiving equity scholarships and grants to assist with university and living expenses.

Sign up for our Scholarships Email Alert to receive an email reminder when scholarships are open for application, or browse available scholarships.

Support services

We understand that starting university is a big learning curve for new students and comes with many challenges, so we have many support services to help you with the transition.
